New Server

Please excuse our mess. We're making a transition over to a new host and so blogging had been non-worky all day, thus the late-published posts. Hopefully, everything will be working with our new host by tomorrow morning. Then, we'll finaly be able to make our jump over to Movable Type. Word.

Baghdad Neighborhoods Declared "Liberated from Occupation"

I haven't seen anything on the TV, but Zeyad of Healing Iraq says a "coup d'etat" is underway in Baghdad. I hope Zeyad, OC alum Bryan and everyone else stays out of harm's way over there.

UPDATE: Here's a UPI story on the open uprising.

Just In Time For The Warm Weather

Although the temperature is in the high 40s in Eugene right now, the weekend was nice and sunny and is indicative of a warm-up to summer; a season the usually rain-soaked, snivelling majority of U students miss out on.

So to celebrate, let's all enjoy some great summer treats: Vodka Cranberry-flavored ice cream bars and Kahlua-laced cookies.

Movable Type Update

Well, early this morning I configured and uploaded all the necessary Movable Type files to our server only to be foiled by a connection error when I ran the final initialization step. After re-uploading files and re-reading the MT installation guide, I gave up and fired off an e-mail to our host and went to sleep. This afternoon I received a response and was informed that our server does not support Movable Type and the MySQL access that I needed was not available. Damn.

So, I guess for now we'll be sticking with Blogger until our host decides to support MT, or until we decide it's worth the trouble to switch to another host. I'll post an update when something new comes up.

Happy Birthday Drudge Report

Whether you like him or not, Matt Drudge is an important figure in the recent technological revolution in journalism. Through the growth of the Internet we have seen the rise of web-based news sites, outlets for political opinion, and first-person local coverage.

So happy 9th birthday, Drudge Report.

April Fools' Joke? Yeah... no.

Check out the front page of today's Oregon Daily Emerald.

Most of the headlines look messed up and the names of recently announced ASUO Exec and Senate candidates in the green bottom-left box are difficult to read. Every page of the Emerald has distorted headlines and other text elements. According to murmurs over at the Emerald, it may be the printer who is at fault and not a staff member.

OC Blog Switching to Movable Type

The Oregon Commentator weblog will probably go through some changes over the weekend as we switch our blogging client from Blogger to Movable Type. Blogger seems to have issues with our host, as posts sometimes don't get published on our blog until hours after they were initially submitted. We've had many good days with Blogger, but there have been some bad days where posts written in the afternoon don't get posted online until midnight (no matter how many times we click the "Publish" button in Blogger).

Additionally, the comment system by backBlog Pro (which is not free) occasionally goes down, and Movable Type provides its own comment system (which is free) that uses our host's server instead of a third party's. Movable Type also provides Trackbacks, which would allow us to let other Movable Type users know that we're linking to one of their posts (like Michael J. Totten or World Wide Pablo).

When Movable Type gets installed on the website this weekend and everything seems to work fine, I'll send out e-mails to current staffers and alumni to invite them onto the revamped weblog. Our Blogger archives will remain, along with the backBlog comments, but all new blog posts should be in Movable Type form.

So please be patient as our weblog goes through some growing pains in the next few days. We'll try to keep the downtime, if any, to the evening hours (PST, of course).

Shake It Like a Polaroid Picture

Eugene Volokh is on a sexual blogging spree today, which actually isn't very sexy at all unless you have a law-talk fetish but it does make for some interesting legal analysis. He begins by writing about an eye-opening story where a 15-year-old girl posted lewd pictures of herself on the Internet and is now being charged by authorities for sexual abuse of children, possession of child pornography and dissemination of child pornography.

Volokh also discusses the legal conundrum of two minors taking sexually explicit photos of each other and whether that constitutes child pornography and/or violates age-of-consent laws.

His most recent post is on the question of what constitutes a lewd photo of a naked child, or just an innocent nude photo, such as a photo of an infant taking a bath (warning, nudity!). He advises people to cut down photos of their kids being naked, if only to avoid ending up in a "dangerous gray area" in front of a judges, juries and prosecutors.

We now return to your regulary scheduled non-sexual blogging on PIRGS and terrible editorial cartoons.

Portland blogger B!x (aka Christopher Frankonis) and his weblog, the Portland Communique, is featured on the front page (Acrobat file) of the Oregonian today.

Check it out.

One Hell of a Ride

Sunday was the 25th anniversary of the Three Mile Island nuclear plant accident. Next month will mark the 18th anniversary of the disaster in Chernobyl.

So I guess it wasn't surprising that Coast-to-Coast AM host Art Bell mentioned a Web site known as "Riding Through Chernobyl" last night while I was driving to Eugene. The Web site is run by Elena, a young woman who enjoys taking trips through the Chernobyl "dead zone" on her Kawasaki motorcycle. She might be extremely brave or stupid, but she certainly takes some haunting photographs of the desolate area.

We can always debate about the dangers or benefits of nuclear power, but if something happens it's undeniable that life will get pretty ugly for anyone who resides nearby.
